Dedication of the new gravestone for Sara Abraha Uvloriak

On Friday 29th September 2023, a service of dedication was held at Fetter Lane Moravian Church for the new gravestone of Sara Abraha Uvloriak. We were joined by, among others, the deputy mayor of RBKC and representatives from the Canada High Commission and Scott Polar Research Institute. Sara died at just 4 years old, soon after arriving in London as one of about 30 Inuit who were ‘exhibited’ at Olympia and the Paris Exhibition. The Moravians did not arrange the exhibition, but many of the Inuit were Moravians or connected to Moravian missions. The Moravians were anxious for their welfare and held meetings for them while in London. It was reported that although they were well looked after by the entrepreneur who brought them, several died. The Fetter Lane Congregation has recently replaced an older gravestone identifying her only as ‘An Eskimo Child’.
